By creating an account and using the Torch & Lily API, you agree to these terms. They are written plainly on purpose.
1. Permitted Use
You may use the API to build applications, tools, research projects, and services — commercial or otherwise — provided you comply with these terms. You are encouraged to build freely.
2. Prohibited Use
- —Do not use the API to generate, spread, or facilitate misinformation about Catholic doctrine, history, or the saints.
- —Do not build tools designed to mock, misrepresent, or be hostile to the Catholic Faith.
- —Do not circumvent rate limits, reverse-engineer the platform, or attempt unauthorized access.
- —Do not share, sell, or transfer your API key to others.
- —Do not use the API in any application that violates applicable law.
3. Data Accuracy & Disclaimer
The Torch & Lily API draws from public domain texts and community-sourced geographic data (OpenStreetMap). We make no warranty of theological accuracy, doctrinal authority, or completeness. This API is not affiliated with, endorsed by, or acting on behalf of the Catholic Church, the Holy See, or any diocese. For authoritative doctrinal guidance, consult a qualified member of the clergy.
4. API Key Responsibility
Your API key is your credential. You are responsible for all usage that occurs under it. If your key is compromised, revoke it immediately from your dashboard and generate a new one. Keys are stored as one-way SHA-256 hashes — we cannot recover a lost key, only revoke it.
5. Rate Limits & Fair Use
Rate limits exist to keep the service stable for everyone. Sustained abuse — including automated bulk scraping beyond reasonable application use — may result in key revocation without notice. Current limits are documented in the Authentication guide.
6. Alpha Software
This is alpha software built and maintained by a single developer. We make no guarantees of uptime, data completeness, or API stability. Endpoints, response schemas, and behaviour may change without notice. We will do our best to communicate breaking changes.
7. Privacy
We store only what your OAuth provider (Google or GitHub) supplies: name, email address, and profile picture. API keys are stored as SHA-256 hashes — never in plaintext. We log API usage for rate limiting purposes. We do not sell, share, or monetize your data. Full privacy policy →
8. Attribution
Attribution is not required, but appreciated. If you build something with the Torch & Lily API, we would genuinely love to hear about it.
9. Termination
We reserve the right to revoke API keys and terminate accounts at our discretion, particularly in cases of abuse, bad faith use, or violation of these terms.
